Our Story

Childs & Co was established in 2005 by furniture designer and maker Iain Childs in Kendal, Cumbria, on the edge of the beautiful Lake District. Our studio and workshop specialise in a diverse variety of furniture projects from our popular children’s furniture and household pieces through to bespoke items of furniture.

Our range began with the ever popular personalised children’s toy box and continues to grow with a selection of hand crafted furniture and unique products for the home. Iain has developed a renowned style of clean lines, durability and sustainability in his furniture designs. He’s known for the quality of his workmanship.

In addition to his own range of products, Iain has also been commissioned to produce ‘one off’ designs and small batches of furniture for Interior Designers, Architects, Sculptors and Private Clients who utilise his material and making expertise to realise their ideas.

Personally made for you

Iain is passionate about design and making. After graduating at Art college he taught for a period before fulfilling his ambition to run his own design studio.

Childs and Co was established 10 years ago. Since then he continues to develop a range of products in his renowned style of clean lines, durability and sustainability.

Where do his ideas come from? Usually when he is out on his bike, but also from listening to his customers. Ideas develop into contemporary well designed and easy to use products made of the best materials personally sourced locally for you.

At Childs & Co we design furniture and accessories for you and your home, becoming family heirlooms. From big to small each item has the same attention to detail and personal effort put into its construction. In addition to our stylish product range Childs & Co also commission and produce one off pieces tailored to your personal needs and taste.

Iain supports other small businesses in and around the historic market town of Kendal in the lake District, Cumbria, where Iain’s studio is based.

Our workshop uses a combination of traditional woodworking techniques alongside more modern manufacturing methods, including our CNC facility. This gives us flexibility in the products we can develop and manufacture for a wide variety of clients.

From big to small, each item has the same attention to detail and personal effort put into its design and construction.
